Practical Tips: Spring Detoxification

As the earth begins to explode with flowers once again, we are met with more sunshine and more energy! Leaving the long and cold winter behind for a fresh start is one of my favorite things about spring. We are now energized and ready to begin new projects, meet new people and experience new adventures. In order for us to be in tip top shape for this new cycle, we must relax, renew and regenerate. As we do this, we strengthen our mind, body and spirit moving closer and more fully into the beauty of our soul!

With all the flowers blooming, this is a great time to start eating more colors. Many delicious fruits and vegetables are ready to be eaten in the springtime, including beets, leeks, asparagus, cherries, grapefruit, lemons and strawberries, making it easier for us to access the amazing nutrient dense gifts of our incredible planet. As we come into this period of renewal, we might want to try a juice detox. This simply means that we drink a juice instead of a snack or meal! A great springtime juice to detox with is this simple recipe:

1 apple
1 grapefruit
1 carrot

Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamin C and full of liminoids, which fight tumors in the body. Grapefruit has also been shown to reduce kidney stones, repair our DNA and protect us against colon cancer.

Apple is an excellent source of fiber, which is great for helping our digestive track move toxins out of our system. Apple also assists with blood sugar regulation and cleanses our liver, which may be abused from a number of chemicals including alcohol, fatty foods, nicotine and drugs.

Carrot is an excellent source of vitamin E and K, as well as beta carotene, potassium, magnesium and fiber.

As we incorporate more colors into our diet, we will begin to feel lighter and more energized. This helps us to power through all of our passions, focus on things that we love and allows us to appreciate all the wonderful things in our lives.

It is also important for us to maintain our higher energy levels during this time. We can do this by strengthening the immune system and increasing oxygen flow in the body. Pranayama is a great way for us to quickly and easily rejuvenate our mind and spirit. An excellent breathing exercise that will allow us to revitalize our body is dog breath. Dog breath helps us to remove toxins from the body, and also cleanses our blood. To do this breath:

Stick your tongue out as far as possible and begin Dog Breath, a rapid panting of an outflow of breath.  Continue for 3-5 minutes. To end: inhale and suspend the breath, pressing the tongue against the roof of your mouth for 15 seconds.  Exhale, and repeat twice more.

Lastly, never underestimate the power of positive thinking. No matter what you're going through, remind yourself that you are alive and able to witness the magnificent universe before you. Remember that each day starts anew every single morning with the rising of the sun. This is your chance to start over. Try and use more positive language towards yourself and others. This will help you to attract more loving experiences and remain connected to all of life. As you practice meditation and awareness of the moment, you will notice that the present has so much love and beauty to offer! Be here now and you will always feel relaxed, renewed and regenerated.
