Mindful Eating Practice

Our relationship with food can be improved through mindful eating. A healthy outlook on what we consciously put into our bodies starts with how we perceive and enjoy our food in the moment that we are eating. The next time hunger arises and you have the opportunity to fuel your body, try this brief meditative practice to cultivate a positive balance with food in your life.

Sitting in front of the food or meal you will be partaking in, begin with 3 deep breaths in and out of your nose, eyes can be open or closed. Actively feel your body and surroundings. Take note of any particular thoughts that you are creating, perhaps about the food you will be eating.

Once you have established a present moment awareness, turn your attention to the food in front of you. Ask yourself a few questions about your food to further tune into the mindful eating practice.

Where did this originate?

How many individuals were involved in making this food available to me?

What is the nourishing content?

Lastly, savor and enjoy! Take in the aspects around you from your setting to your current social company while you spend time immersed in the simple act of eating. When satiated to a comfortable level, end with 3 deep breaths in and out of your nose. Notice your body and your mind. And smile!
